It's July and the inescapable sweltering heat is now upon us (funny how we love to complain about everything that weather seems to throw our way, isn't it?). If you're like me, chances are you grabbed an ice coffee, or another cold beverage of choice, this morning on your way to work. Now here is a little-paid-attention-to fact: every one of these drinks typically comes with a one-time use disposable plastic straw. And this is where the problem begins.
Forbes reports that an estimated 175 million plastic straws are used and thrown out every day by unsuspecting customers. Much like most other plastic waste, a large percentage of these end up in the ocean, where it is ingested by marine organisms, or slowly broken down, releasing bisphenol-A (BPA), a toxic chemical that is carcinogenic and leads to hormone complications. Sounds unappealing? We think so too!
Starbucks has recently joined the ranks of other major corporations in raising awareness about this issue and committing to ban single-use plastic straws by 2020. Although plastic straws represent only 0.03 % of estimated total plastic pollution, this is a positive step in a fight toward a plastic-free world. We applaud Starbucks for making an environmentally responsible choice, and more importantly, for raising awareness about the repercussions! #bethechange #ecofriendly #zerowaste
